RONNIE JOHNSON IS THE TOP GUN AT GREEN VALLEY COLLECTS ALMOST $10,000. SUNDAY
GLENCOE, AL (10/21/07) -- The 2007 season at Green Valley Speedway came to a close Sunday as the TOP GUN TOURNAMENT of Champions races took to the track in all eight (8) divisions at the Gadsden/Glencoe, Alabama, 3/8ths XL sweeping clay banked racing oval. In the top three (3) divisions close to $10,000. was on the line, to win and that’s just what the man known around the country as the CHATTANOOGA FLASH came to do... WIN! Registering for the three Late Model style divisions; the Super Late Models, the Limited Late Models and the Crate Late Models, Ronnie Johnson was all business this weekend.
"I've been here several times this season, and I must commend Mr. Harker and his workers, this track was very racey tonight, much more so than our previous visits." stated RJ on Monday from his home in Chattanooga, Tennessee. "I'd like to thank Rick Hixson and Austin Trucking for allowing me to run their MasterSbilt racecar this weekend too... No matter how hard I try, getting three machines ready is just about impossible." concluded Johnson. The two time Dirt Track World Champion stated his outlook as being positive, on wrapping up the 2007 racing season with several events in November, which includes returning to the EAMS track down in Alabama which he broke his right arm last year.
In the Super Late Model division RJ put his black # 5 "Miller Bros. Coal Inc., American Billet, VP Racing Fuels, AFCO Racing Products" sponsored MasterSbilt, Vinson Racing Engines, Pontiac GTO racecar on the pole Saturday night besting the GROUP QUALIFYING with the AMB Transponder System, fifteen (15) other competitors for top spot. Sophomore racing sensation BLACKMAGIC Dingus Griffin set second quick time to Johnson with Oxford, AL's Terry Smith rounding out the QUIK 3. In Sunday's "A" Main 50-lap feature it was all Johnson taking the $5,000. pay-dirt as Boaz, AL's Tim Busha and Council, Iowa's Mike Collins raced from 7th and 17th to finish second and third respectfully. Griffin and 18th starter Lee Sutton of Talyorsville, Georgia rounded out the top five finishers.
In the Crate Late Model feature it was RJ chasing Scotty Knowles, who was piloting a newly purchased CATDADDY GRT racecar. Johnson in his # 5 "Miller Bros. Coal Inc., American Billet, VP Racing Fuels, AFCO Racing Products" sponsored Warrior chassis, GM Performance, Pontiac GTO racecar would apparently take second as the checkers waved over the field. Upon technical inspection of the top three cars, following Fastrak explicit procedures, Scott Knowles # 66 failed track inspection. The violation was subsequently reviewed with and affirmed by FasTrak’s National Technical Official Rick Ellison. This violation ultimately handed Johnson the $2,000.victory. The track owner Dennis Harker said that “Ronnie Johnson and the other Top Gun Drivers put on a display of racing that soon won’t be forgotten at The Valley”. Local racers Greg Chumley and the SANDMAN Brian Smith finished second and third. Kasey Hall and Blake Stewart, fresh from competition with the FASTRAK series in Tennessee Wednesday thru Friday, rounded out the top five officially.
In the Limited Late Models it was Oxford, AL racer Jason Hiett setting fast time in GROUP QUALIFYING Saturday over the fifteen (15) car field.
Divisional Champion Brian Smith put his machine on the outside front row against, who else, but Ronnie Johnson. This time RJ was piloting fellow Tennesseeian's mount, the white # 16 "Austin Trucking, Parker Store" sponsored Mastersbilt, Ford Fusion owned by Rick Hixson. Johnson held off a gaggle of GVS locals once pole-sitter Smith faded from the top ten. Brian Qualls, Lewis Rakestraw, double duty racer the LAWBREAKER Ryan Law and Glenn Starr finished second thru fifth behind Johnson's borrowed bullet.
In other racing action: Bart “Super” Starr (# 11) of Hokes Bluff, AL, won the Super Street feature, Marty May (# 55) Pisgah, AL, won the Hobby feature. Jack & Tammy Rayburn from GA. Were awarded the Cruiser feature Top Gun Title, after the top three cars were either disqualified for using illegal motors or their refusal to tear down for inspection. Harold Willingham the season long total points Champion ultimately finished second in Cruisers. In the Pony features: it was Rocky McNabb (# 01) of Lenoir City, TN winning the Modified Pony feature, while Richie Graham (# 75) of Rockmart, GA, won the Pure Pony feature.
Green Valley Officially announced that the Top Gun Tournament will become an permanent and annual Fall event, with a completely modified format and reduction to two track provisional being awarded in the future. The event will be renamed to “The David Hare “Top Gun Memorial”. This news came at the dedication ceremonies Sunday to honor local Legend and frequent track attendee David Hare, as his family participated in this Tribute to their loved one at the Top Gun event.
