STEVEN ENDICOTT WINS CAREER FIRST SLM RACE READYING FOR O'SAS AT GREEN VALLEY

Story & Photo by: Steve Hixson

GLENCOE, AL (7/21/04) -- It's a special thing to witness a first victory for a racer and Saturday night at the New Green Valley Speedway in Gadsden/Glencoe, Alabama, racefans were treated with just that, as Newnan, Georgia racer Steven Endicott, in preparation for next Friday (July 20th) nights O'Reilly Southern All-Star race, won his career first dirt Super Late Model feature. Fifteen (15)  REBEL CHALLENGE SLM racers signed in for the 25 lap feature with Ballplay, AL, racer T.J. Alford setting fast time and drawing for the pole position, during the QUIK SIX feature race inversion process. Endicott would lead from the start, using his outside front row starting position to put the # 00 "Drywall Interior, West Haven Speed Shop, M&S Concrete, American Racer South" sponsored, TNT chassis, Clements racing engines, Pontiac GTO racecar out in front for the duration.

On the start of the SLM feature Alford and Robert Gant failed the start, with Gant receiving the penalty after Kevin Comer wheel hopped another racecar as the field stacked up on the front straight-away. Endicott used this outside front row birth to over-power Alford as the green flew over the field, with the pack headed into turn one. The very fast GVS track didn't disappoint racefans as Alford and Gant battled with James Cline, Glenn Starr and Gar Dickson. Endicott hurriedly built up a strong lead as Alford and Gant diced for second and third. Living up to his "ICE-MAN" image Endicott, worked back-marker traffic with much percision and by the latter part of the race, had over a straight-away lead. Rod Carroll stalled his racecar off turn four, inside five to go, allowing a closure for the restart. Gant diving underneath Alford in turn two, going for second on the restart, spun and collected Dickson, which ended both racers night prematurely.

With Endicott all to himself, Alford was unable to capitolize and would end up holding off Cline for the runner-up position. Starr and double duty racer Ryan Law (finished 7th in the FASTRAK Crate feature) of Piedmont, AL rounded out the top five. In other racing action:  Glen McWarters (# G1) of Newnan, GA won the Limited Late Model 25 lap feature, Tony Kemp (# 16) of Carrolton, GA won the FASTRAK Top Gun Crate Late Model 25 lap feature, Jeffery Crane (# 8) of Piedmont, AL won the Super Street feature, David Beam (# 44) of Lerly, GA came from 8th to win the Hobby feature, Robert Combs (# 55) of Aragon, GA won the Cruiser feature, Von Casey (# 28) of Lindale, GA won the Pure Pony feature and ole # 13 Brian Dodgen of Ohatchee, AL kept his $500 bounty alive winning the Modified Pony feature.
