GLENCOE, AL (9/8/07) -- Somebody forgot to tell sophomore REBEL CHALLENGE Super Late Model racing sensation Dingus Griffin that you can't win at the new Green Valley Speedway using the top groove at the XL 3/8th mile, sweeping clay banked oval. Saturday night the Alexandria, Alabama based racer using good ole BLACKMAGIC, did just that at the Gadsden/Glencoe, facility in preparation from next weekends $10,000. to win, SLM race with the Southern Regional Racing series. A full night of racing for all eight (8) divisions greeted fans with 3-Lap GROUP QUALIFYING with the AMB Transponder Systems clocking in the thirteen (13) car field. Griffin in his black # 49 "Curbow Logging, LNF, Allstar Graphics" sponsored MasterSbilt, Griffin powered, Pontiac GTO set the $150 Z-MAX MICRO-LUBRICANT fast-time with the only 14-second lap recorded at 14:921.
Second overall fastest qualifier Robert Gant got the pole when the inversion process pulled by Griffin swapped the fron row starting positions. Straying out to GVS, for the weekend, possibly serving as a warm-up for next weekends BIG MONEY race was third overall FQ Terry Smith of Oxford, AL. As the field roared to life under the flagstand, Griffin didn't miss a beat and powered into a commanding lead Gant followed using his patiented low line, but wasn't getting anywhere and soon began edging up the track, in attempt to reel in BLACKMAGIC. Smith had a solid lead over the rest of the top five as last weeks winner and current GVS REBEL CHALLENGE SLM points leader T.J. Alford battled with Dennis Hale. Griffin used good sense as back-marker traffic came into affect allowing Gant to slowly draw closer. As the checkers waved over the field of the caution free 25-lap race, Gant drew closest to Griffin but it was too little too late.
In other racing action: the Limited Late Models was topped by Tom Maddox (# 22) of Centre, AL using Clay Grogan's new MasterSbilt racecar. The TOP GUN/FASTRAK Crate Late Model feature saw Jason Morris (# 10) in the Allens Lock & Key, Chevrolet Monte Carlo inherit the win after Eddie Terry took the checkers, but was light at the scales. Michael Jones (# 18) of Rome, GA won the Super Street feature over last weeks winner David Beam. Davey Arnold (# 56) of Pisgah, AL held off Kyle May after a huge crash took out half the Hobby field. Robert Combs (# 55) of Aragon won the Cruiser feature. The Pure Pony feature was won by Richie Graham (# 14) Rockmart, GA, while Brian Dodgen (# 13) of Ohatchee, AL, took what some believe will be his last Modified Pony feature race. Next weekend the S.R.R.S. SLM's headline the Green Valley Speedway for the biggest race since the February BAMA BASH with the $10,000 to win LAUNDRY MAN 100.
